Programming the Rumen to get Calves onto Pasture Early

Investing in your calves has never been simpler. Fiber Fresh not only rivals the price of other feed options but more importantly provides nutritional benefits that lead to the best health and productivity of your animal. Fiber Fresh specialty calf feed products are all completely natural, so you know your calves are not being fed any preservatives that may have negative side effects.

There is no comparison or other fibre-based calf feed in the market which offers the same benefits to the growing calf as Fiber Start® and Fiber Gain®. The likes of straw or hay simply do not provide the same type of nutritional value and only serve to fill up the rumen, taking away valuable space for energy and protein-rich feeds essential for maximum calf growth.

Fiber Fresh have created a completely exclusive Controlled Fermentation Process which retains more than 90% of the original value of nutrients from the field. This means every bag is consistent in nutrient value and ME (Metabolisable Energy), for optimal health and performance.

Development of the rumen is crucial to a calf’s productivity. It is the engine that sets them up for life on the paddock. Fiber Fresh feeds are proven to have superior levels of protein, nutrients, amino acids and digestible energy which contributes to better health, performance, and immunity. Fiber Fresh’s nutrient-rich superfood carefully nurtures rumen growth, which in turn, develops and healthier and more productive animal.

Trials showed greater papillae development by Fiber Fresh reared calves, by comparison to calves reared on a meal/milk ration. But what does this mean for the calf? This results in a significantly increased nutrient absorption surface area, for Fiber Fresh reared calves. Calves can subsequently get more from the feeds you are putting in, leading to improvements in growth and production later in life.

Calves should be introduced to Fiber Start® (or Fiber Gain®), as early as possible, while they are on milk and/or alongside any concentrate or cereal-based meal (if using Fiber Start®). Calves will initially only consume small quantities, but early adaption to the taste and texture allows them to gear up for higher intakes. As a guide, they will be eating about 2kg/day per calf of Fiber Gain® (as fed), as weaning approaches.

Fiber Fresh Calf feeds do not contain the coccidiostat ionophore Monensin, thus other measures to manage coccidiosis might be required and these options will depend on the individual situation on your farm. Monensin, while used extensively in the calf feed industry, is toxic to other animals, including dogs and horses.

Over the course of 12 weeks, a Fiber Fresh reared calf would consume approximately 1.5-2 bags of Fiber Start® or Fiber Gain®.
